If there’s one surefire way to tumble down a time-sucking internet rabbit hole, it’s by Googling “best ways to organize beauty products”. Lucky for you, we’ve tried—and written about—lots of those ideas over the years. Now that you’ve fully recovered from your New Year’s partying and are ready to get down to the annual business of purging and organizing all your belongings, we’re here to save you time. Here’s a list of our all-time favorite easy, inexpensive ideas for taming beauty-product clutter.
Shop the kitchen aisle
We’ve found that the organizing items you’ll find here—intended for fridges, cabinets and kitchen drawers—end up being less expensive and far roomier than items designed specifically to hold beauty supplies. Example: We deconstructed those pricey acrylic drawers many people (including Kim Kardashian) use to organize their beauty stash by using stackable acrylic containers from Target (shown below: Interdesign Fridge Binz). You can measure a closet shelf space and custom-design a stacked arrangement that fits, and take out different trays when needed.
Other organizational gems in the kitchen aisle: plastic or wooden drawer boxes; they’re an excellent way to break up space in a large bathroom-vanity drawer bento-style and isolate different categories of supplies (lipsticks, makeup brushes, skincare, etc.). And the small lazy susans intended for cabinets are ideal for grouping taller and more delicate bottles/jars—just spin for easy access without knocking things over.
And here’s one more goal for 2016: Don’t forget about organizing the beauty containers you no longer need, so you can properly recycle them. Designate a box for empty containers; once it’s full, send it to TerraCycle. Easy-peasy way to help save the earth.
